For almost five hundred years this was the major Bible translation of the English-speaking world. Its style and vocabulary now may to many seem dated but it remains a firm favourite with millions of believers around the globe. Later translations may have much to offer in terms of technical precision or of easy twenty-first century reading, but none can match the power and grandeur of its language, especially for public reading.

The New King James is a recent production which aims to incorporate modern scholarship and to improve contemporary intelligibility whilst retaining the dignity of the older version. It succeeds to a considerable degree.
