Holy Bible: New International Version

The NIV was first published in 1979 and has come to be the most widely used Bible translation in the world. More than 100 scholars from a wide cross-section of Christian denominations, and from countries around the globe, worked for 15 years to complete it. Their aim was to produce a translation in 20th century English which was faithful to the original languages whilst also in clear, beautifully written and dignified phraseology suitable for both private and public reading. It is available in a vast range of colours, formats and bindings of which the following are just a few..

This Cambridge edition of the NIV Popular Cross-Reference Bible is characterised by a clear, bold text design and a generous print size. It is printed on unusually thin paper - so the text is not only easy to read, but the Bible itself is a slim and flexible volume. It includes the Old and New Testaments in the anglicised NIV translation (that is, with American spellings replaced by standard international English) with over 50,000 cross-references and 16 pages of colour maps. The NIV text (anglicised, not American English) is backed up by study aids: translators' notes, a 'conversion guide' for weights and measures (with metric and imperial equivalents) - and over 50,000 NIV cross-references. About the size of a standard Filofax, it is compact enough to carry around easily, and comes in a slipcase to protect it when on the shelf. A splendidly presented Bible that will make a memorable gift.

NIV Pocket New Testament

Although, as we remark on our page about the Bible on the PDA, many people now carry their electronic Bibles, it would be exaggerating to say that this is the majority. Tens of thousands of Christians carry a pocket New Testament, and this is an exquisite edition from Cambridge University Press - suitable as a special gift (including to oneself). It comes in three colours: black, burgundy and white. The NIV text (US spelling) is printed in two columns, with section headings, and red-letter text highlights the words of Christ. It is printed on gilt-edged Bible paper (silver-edged in the white binding), bound in fine calfskin leather and sold in a Cambridge slipcase featuring King's College Chapel. A presentation page is printed inside the front. (NOTE: In early January 2007, only the white leather binding was in stock; you can click on the other two to see whether they have again become available). (RRP: £22.99)

Wide-margin NIV study bibles

This excellent edition, in a red hard cover, has wide margins all around the double-column text. This allows space for readers to record their own notes. The paper is specially chosen to take hand-writing in ink. It includes a range of additional study features, with over 50,000 cross-references, comprehensive footnotes, and notes regarding parallel passages. (RRP: £26.99).

The clear print has been specially chosen for ease of reading. There are just 23 lines on each page. The Old Testament occupies three volumes, with the New Testament in the fourth.
