Home > World Affairs > Middle East World Affairs: Middle EastIt is scarcely necessary to state that the Middle East is one of the most strategically significant regions of the entire world. What happens there has ramifications not only within the countries of its own region but also globally. The Palestinian question, even longer-term arab-Israeli tensions, oil and gas production and reserves, the emergence of Iran as a potential nuclear power and, of course, the future of Iraq; these are just some of the vital geo-political issues focusing on the eastern end of the Mediterranean, the Gulf and the near-Asian nations. In this section we are building a display of useful published works on the region and, possibly unsurprisingly, these will express different views and perspectives. In studying such a complex region it is essential to read material written from more than one viewpoint if anything like a comprehensive understanding is to be acquired. Don't forget also that our "Read-the-World" scheme allows you within each of the country or regional sections to move easily between world affairs, travel and history departments to obtain a broader view. Also, for this region our section on Oil & Energy should have books that you will find helpful.
